Vermillion - June 2003

The troop headed out west to the Vermillion River.  We arrived Friday evening.  First thing Saturday morning, our troop bugler plays Reveille.

The scoutmaster discovers a plot to bring harm to the bugler and/or his trumpet.  A security detail is put in place for protection.

The scouts anticipate a busy day. (either that or they are plotting an alternative plan to snuff out the bugle)

The Colors are posted.

Then we head off to raft down one of the less calm sections of the Vermillion River.

Well - after a long hard day, time to sit around the campfire and relax?

Not this time!  Mr. D. sends the Troop to the pool.

Note from the Paparazzi:  It was nice having the camera around all day.  The minute anyone got close to splashing our boat, all the paparazzi needed to do was pull the camera out and say, "Not so fast, you'll get the camera wet!"

While at the pool, the paparazzi kept the camera in hand most of the time to avoid getting dunked.  At one point one of the scouts noticed the camera missing.  Moments later, a group of scouts in the pool said, "Mr. Pearson, could you please take our picture?"  The paparazzi replied that the camera had been set off in the corner.  At that very moment, three scouts who had quietly slipped behind me made one big push.  Kaaaa Sploosh!   Yes, the paparazzi had let his guard down and paid dearly for it.

Time to retire the colors.

That normally means that it's time to stoke up the campfire and start relaxing.  But not this time!  The scoutmaster said we had yet one more event on our schedule.  We drove to the race tracks!

During one of the breaks, the announcer spotted our troop and decided to interview one of our scouts.  Their discussion was broadcast over P.A. system for the whole track!  We're famous!

Some people say they don't go to hockey games to see fights.  Those same people say they don't go to the races to see all the accidents.

There were some great, uh, I mean unfortunate accidents this evening.

All it takes is one driver to rudely cut another driver off.  Road rage at it's very best sets in.  Whoops did I say best, I meant to say "worst!"

The accelerating, skidding, braking, cccrrrash, sound of the metal crunching, auto parts flying everywhere.  Woah!  What a sight!

Eh Hem, naturally, as good scouts, we were sooooo disappointed to see such displays of road rage.  Yessssss!

Sunday morning we took our time waking up and having breakfast.  A watermelon had been brought along that needed to disappear.  It did!

Scouts definitely enjoy watermelon!

On the way back to Wheaton, the troop stopped at Perkins for a nice closing meal.

This was a busy campout.  A person needs a few days to recover from a weekend like this.
